Information Graphic

A Fruitful Partnership: The Fig and Fig Wasp

This illustration aims to depict the intertwined lifecycles of the fig and fig wasp. Guided in a clockwise direction around the hero image through numbering and visual cues, the reader learns about how the two organisms contribute to a mutually beneficial relationship, allowing for propagation of life. Insets and close up images highlight meaningful events that occur during the lifecycle of the wasp within the fig. Schematic illustrations were used to balance the visual complexity of the piece.

The technical goal of this illustration was to create an information graphic to explain a complex biomedical phenomenon and create a well established information hierarchy and narrative through the use of text and space. Careful consideration was given to the difficulty of the content and quantity of text was reduced to enhance readability while still providing enough context to understand the subject matter.

Research & Ideation

After identifying an interesting biomedical subject to visualize and conducting research on the topic, I created several thumbnails to explore potential layout ideas. A final comprehensive sketch was created after peer and client feedback.

Rendering

Working between Illustrator and Photoshop, I used the Grisaille method to render each detailed image in the infographic.

Compositing

All images, text, and graphical elements were collated in illustrator for the final assembly of the infographic.
